Rajesh Hamal (राजेश हमाल) is a Nepali actor and television presenter whose career helped define an era of mainstream Nepali cinema. Widely referred to by audiences and entertainment media as “Mahanayak,” or “great hero,” he became particularly associated with the action films, family dramas and romances of the 1990s and 2000s. The epithet is a popular cultural honorific, not an official designation. [1]
Early life and education
Hamal was born in Tansen, Palpa, Nepal. His published biography gives his birthday as 9 June. He spent portions of his upbringing and education outside Nepal and completed postgraduate studies in English literature. That academic background has remained part of his public identity alongside his cinema career. Before becoming a film actor, he also worked in modelling. [1]
Entry into Nepali cinema
Hamal’s feature-film breakthrough came in Yug Dekhi Yug Samma (1991), a romantic drama directed by Deepak Rayamajhi and co-starring Kristi Mainali. It introduced him to movie audiences at a time when Nepal’s domestic film industry operated on comparatively modest production and distribution resources. The film became the starting point for a career extending across several decades. [2]
He followed with Deuta (1992), directed by Tulsi Ghimire. The film is frequently identified as an important step in his rise to widespread fame. His later credits range from mainstream commercial dramas to period films such as Basanti (2000), adapted from Diamond Shumsher Rana’s historical novel. Other selected screen credits include Sathi (1999). The filmography below is selective rather than a claim to list every production. [3]
Career and public recognition
Hamal’s screen image became closely associated with a resonant speaking voice, long hair, and the imposing leading-man roles familiar to Nepali film audiences of the period. His name carried recognition across generations of cinema-going audiences. The use of “Mahanayak” in popular discussion also reflects how celebrity and acting reputation can become interwoven; the label should be understood as a public epithet rather than a measurable title awarded by an industry authority.
As the film industry changed, Hamal continued to appear in public events, interviews and television. In 2019 he presented Ko Banchha Crorepati, the Nepali adaptation of the television quiz franchise Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? His participation in television helped bring his familiar public persona to another medium.
Writing and reflection
In October 2025, the book Yug Dekhi Yug Samma was launched in Kathmandu. Developed through extensive conversations between Hamal and journalist Yangesh, it draws on his recollections of childhood, cinema, personal experience and society. Rather than a conventional list of films, the publication offers a first-person account of the experiences behind his long screen career. [5]
Personal life
Hamal married Madhu Bhattarai in Kathmandu on 24 May 2014. Their marriage was reported by The Kathmandu Post at the time. This profile includes the marriage as a documented public fact and deliberately omits unrelated private family details. [4]
Place in Nepali popular culture
Hamal’s significance extends beyond any single role. His career connects the era of dominant theatrical stars with later television and digital media, when audiences began encountering veteran actors through interviews, clips, and online conversations as well as films. His continuing public profile offers a point of reference for discussions about how Nepali cinema’s audience, storytelling conventions and commercial expectations have changed.
